In Pace

In the second half of 2000, 240 faithful of the Prelature and 16 members of the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross passed away.

The suffrages stipulated by Blessed Josemaria have been offered for these deceased. As we continue to pray for them, let us thank God for the example that they have left us through their fidelity in striving to transform their professional work and the ordinary circumstances of their lives into an occasion for loving God and serving the Church and all souls. Their love for God constitutes the meaning and value of their lives, whether outstanding in the eyes of others or whether quite ordinary, as was true in most cases.

In addition to the names of all who have died during this period, we have gathered a few biographical details about some of the deceased, which give an idea of the variety of circumstances and situations in which the faithful of Opus Dei live. For reasons of space, we are not including this data in the other cases, but we must not forget that we have a debt of gratitude towards all of them for the example of fidelity that they have left us. But these brief sketches are enough to help us live the Communion of Saints better with those who have preceded us to heaven.

Concepción Andrés Lamberti was born in Madrid, Spain, on October 10, 1921, and belonged to Opus Dei since 1946. She was very generous in her dedication to domestic tasks in centers of the Prelature, conscious of the importance of her work there for the apostolate. She worked with joy, even in moments that were difficult due to the lack of material means. During her sickness she gave an example of self-denial and courage in accepting the will of God, transmitting peace and joy to those around her. She died in Madrid on August 4, 2000.

Eduard Arumí Blancafort was born in La Garriga, near Barcelona, Spain, on April 1, 1938. He met Opus Dei in 1958 and formed part of the Brafa Sports School from its beginnings in 1963. He dedicated himself to teaching sports and physical education as a means of providing young men with a well-rounded formation. During the last years of his life he published numerous opinion articles in specialized magazines and newspapers. He communicated a Christian spirit to the many people he was in contact with in the fields of art, culture and sport. He died in Andorra on August 23, 2000.

Enrica Botella Raduán was born in Alcoy, Spain, on September 27, 1917. She was one of the first women members of Opus Dei. In 1949 she moved to Italy where she stayed until 1966, supervising the administration of centers of Opus Dei in Rome, Naples and Milan. In Barcelona, where she lived during recent years until her death on September 26, 2000, her work put her in contact with many people to whom she transmitted a love for God and the Church through her prayer, attention and affection. She gave an example of generosity and fidelity to the spirit of Opus Dei, which she had the opportunity of learning directly from Blessed Josemaria over many years.

Laura Busca Otaegui was born in Zumarraga, Guipuzcoa, Spain, on November 3, 1912 and belonged to Opus Dei since 1953. She moved to Pamplona, where her husband, Dr. Eduardo Ortiz de Landázuri, worked in the beginnings of the University of Navarre hospital. She was one of the first women pharmacists in Spain. The mother of seven children, she was known for her generosity, simplicity and constant good humor, even during the long years of sickness that she bore with abandonment in God’s hands. She died in Pamplona on October 11, 2000.

Julia Capón Bonnell (Kitty) was born in Santiago del Estero, Argentina, on January 20, 1932. She got to know Opus Dei in Rosario in 1950, and in 1956 she moved to Rome where she met Blessed Josemaria. Upon returning to South America, she lived in Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina. During her later years she gave impetus to the apostolic work through periodic trips to cities in Argentina where centers of the Prelature had not yet been established. Her good humor, strong and enterprising character, positive outlook and constant availability were a stimulus for everyone. She died of cancer in Buenos Aires on August 19, 2000.

Jaime Faustmann Salas was born in Bilbao, Spain, on January 25, 1933. He studied industrial engineering in Bilbao and Madrid and later obtained a doctorate in this field at the University of Aachen in Germany. He exercised his profession in companies in Switzerland, Madrid and Bilbao, and taught at the University of Navarre and at the State University of Navarre. He was noted for his cordiality in dealing with colleagues and friends, by whom he was greatly appreciated and loved. He died in Pamplona on November 3, 2000.

Ramon Santiago Fernández Cuervo de la Grana, Jr. was born on January 7, 1927 in Manila. One of the first Supernumeraries in the Philippines, he studied accounting and was one of the first to undertake real estate development in his country. He had 13 children and gave generous assistance to many families in financial straits. His colleagues admired his moral integrity, competence and generosity, as well as his simple and sober way of life and the great care he took of his employees. In July of 1998 he was diagnosed with cancer, but in spite of his sickness he continued to work with joy and supernatural outlook until his death on September 10, 2000.

Juan Juarros Nieto was born in Madrid on May 16, 1924. Married and the father of seven children, he belonged to Opus Dei since 1963. A lawyer by profession, he was characterized by a great apostolic spirit that he maintained right to the last moments of his life. He served also as a police official, and both in that function and in his work as a lawyer he was noted for his moral rectitude and professional competence. He died on August 14, 2000, in San Sebastian.

Rev. Fernando Lázaro Romeo was born in Vizcaya, Spain, on April 1, 1932 and died in Santa Fe, Argentina, on August 10, 2000. He joined Opus Dei in 1950, and in 1967, having obtained doctorates in engineering and in moral theology, was ordained a priest. In 1974 he moved to Argentina where he carried out a deep priestly work among people of all walks of life. He dedicated many hours to preaching and to administering the sacrament of confession and devoted special attention to work with diocesan priests in various cities throughout the country.

Rev. Miguel Angel Madurga was born in Zaragoza, Spain, on April 10, 1925, and joined Opus Dei in 1942. In 1949, after receiving his licentiate in medicine, he moved to Italy. Ordained a priest in 1953, he carried out a broad pastoral work in various Italian cities. In Palermo he was spiritual director of the diocesan seminary, where he spent many years contributing with zeal and dedication to the formation of hundreds of priests. He died on July 13, 2000 in Edolo, Brescia.

Renato Pizzioli was born in Trieste, Italy, on August 15, 1923. The first Supernumerary from that city, he contributed with great generosity to the beginnings of stable apostolic work by Opus Dei in Trieste. As a family physician he was greatly loved and highly esteemed. Afflicted with a grave illness in his final years, he was always exemplary in his participation in the means of spiritual formation. He died in his native city on October 5, 2000.

Raphaël Saint-Maurice was born on December 6, 1913, in the province of Quebec, Canada. A high school mathematics teacher, he was one of the first Supernumeraries in Canada. The father of seven children, he was faithful to his plan of spiritual life and to the means of formation even during the ten years in which he lived far from a center of Opus Dei and despite precarious health. He was generous with his time and gave courses in Christian doctrine, helped the needy, and took part in formational activities in his parish. During his sickness he maintained his peace and good humor and showed to the end a great trust in our Lady. He died on August 11, 2000.

Virginia Urdaniz de Wyler was born in Buenos Aires, on January 26, 1921. Married and with six children, she considered her oldest daughter, who was born with Down Syndrome, as her greatest treasure. She taught her daughter to pray and to live with a Christian spirit, just as she did her other children. They prayed the rosary together each day. Of an enterprising spirit, for many years she spared neither time nor effort to help run a work of Christian formation for young people, and in this connection was involved in many fund-raising activities. She accepted with cheerfulness and good humor the sickness from which she died on October 5, 2000.

Rev. Victor Manuel del Valle Noriega was born in Mexico City on June 4, 1931. He belonged to Opus Dei since 1953, and was one of the first faithful of the Prelature to begin the apostolic work of Opus Dei in Guatemala, where he lived from July of 1955. He was an architect of great professional prestige, winning several international awards. On September 21, 1997 he was ordained a priest. In August of 2000 cancer was diagnosed, which he bore with supernatural outlook, offering his sufferings for the Pope and for the apostolic work of Opus Dei in the service of the Church. He died in Guatemala on November 24, 2000.

Cecilia Vargas de Poveda was one of the first women lawyers in Colombia. Though married she was unable to have children. This circumstance, in which she saw the will of God, gave her more time to take part in works of Christian formation. Her love for the Church and her country led her to seek the collaboration of her colleagues in opposing a law contrary to human life. She died on September 26, 2000.

Ana Maria Yasuko Ohno was born on April 3, 1905 in Osaka and died on September 30, 2000. She was the first Supernumerary woman in Japan. She was of great help in beginning the apostolic work of Opus Dei in her country. She carried out a broad apostolate among non-Catholic and non-Christian university women and professionals, whom she brought closer to God and the Church by means of catechism classes.
