Faithful of Opus Dei who died in the first half of 2001 |
María Josefa Borregón was born on March 17, 1932, in Segovia, Spain. A member of Opus Dei since 1960, she was a teacher known for her industriousness, optimism and joy, reflecting her deep faith. Her apostolic zeal was an example to everyone around her. She took advantage of every opportunity to bring others to God, and showed an unflagging spirit of service and a real concern for the needs of others. On April 21, 2001, she suffered a heart attack while saying the rosary. After receiving the last sacraments, she died two hours later.
Luka Brajnovic Davinovic was born in Kotor, Croatia, in 1919. He studied law in Zagreb, and was president of the League of Croatian Students. When Communism took over his country, he was persecuted for the faith and risked his life with Christian heroism on various occasions. He was forced to leave his country and spent twelve years without being able to see his wife and daughter. He managed to reach Italy, where he met Blessed Josemaria. He later moved to Spain, and resided there until the end of his life. He joined Opus Dei in 1952. In 1960 he became a professor in the School of Journalism at the University of Navarre. He was noted for his simplicity, good humor and spirit of service. He died in Pamplona on February 8, 2001.
Dorita Calvo Serrado was born on January 19, 1908 in Valladolid, Spain. A member of the Work since 1945, she began the apostolic work of Opus Dei in Italy and in Chile, spurred on by her supernatural spirit and her zeal to bring many souls to God. Her joy and good humor continued undiminished, despite the limitations caused by her advanced age at the end of her life. She died on February 27, 2001 in Pamplona, Spain.
Ricardo José Camacho Fashen was born in Guatemala City on August 18, 1945. He became a member of the Prelature in 1983. He was married and had four children. An architect with great professional prestige, he collaborated enthusiastically in various apostolic undertakings, especially in the founding of the Nabajal Club and in the construction of Los Volcanes Center in the city of Escuintla, Guatemala. Around the middle of the year 2000 he was diagnosed with a serious illness that he bore with serenity and a supernatural spirit, offering his sufferings for the Pope, the Church and Opus Dei. He died on June 27, 2001.
José Ferrer-Bonsoms Bonsoms was born in L’Arboç del Penedés, Tarragona, Spain, on March 19, 1920. He was one of the first Supernumeraries of Opus Dei. A member of the Work since 1949, he had fifteen children. For professional reasons, he lived in Argentina and Peru for a number of years, where he helped in the expansion of the apostolates of Opus Dei. He was very industrious and self-sacrificing. He held high executive positions in several businesses and lived the spirit of Christian poverty in an exemplary way. He died in Pamplona on April 14, 2001.
Georges Friedling was born in Rabat, Morocco, on August 8, 1930. He was the first Supernumerary in Aix-en-Provence. An engineer, he spent most of his professional career working in an atomic energy center in Provence. During the last two years of his life, he suffered a progressive paralysis as a consequence of a cerebral tumor, which he bore with great supernatural outlook and good humor. He died on February 17, 2001, in Aix-en-Provence, France.
Ignatius Gramunt was born on March 20, 1932 and joined Opus Dei in 1952, when he was a law student. He was ordained a priest in 1957. That same year he moved to the United States where he lived until 1996, when he was appointed regional vicar of Kenya. He was know for his cheerfulness and diligence in all his pastoral duties, seeking always to fulfill the will of God. He was an ecclesiastical judge for the Diocese of Peoria, Illinois, and was appointed as papal chaplain (monsignor). In Kenya he was one of the founders of the Canon Law Society. He died of a heart attack in Nairobi on June 16, 2001.
William Murray was born in Glasgow, Scotland on November 4, 1924, of Irish descent. The father of three children, he moved to Dublin in the fifties, where he worked in a managerial capacity in various businesses. He was a professor in the School of Economic Sciences at Trinity College, and in other Dublin universities. A member of Opus Dei since 1976, he carried out a broad apostolate with people in the world of business. He died in Dublin on February 16, 2001.
Francisco Navarro Rodríguez was the first Associate member of Opus Dei. He was born in Valdepeñas, Spain, on January 6, 1922. He studied commerce and worked in a bank in Ciudad Real. A member of Opus Dei since 1950, he helped begin, under the impetus of Blessed Josemaria, the apostolic activity of Opus Dei in Vallecas, a low income area in Madrid, where in 1958 the Tajamar Institute was established. He carried out a fruitful apostolate through his professional work for more than fifty years. He died on June 16, 2001, in Madrid.
Maria de Lourdes Pinto Lima Giorgi was born in Amparo, Brazil, on February 27, 1915. Married and the mother of seven children, she showed great generosity and enthusiasm in helping to begin the apostolic work of Opus Dei in her country. Together with her husband, she was instrumental in the construction of one of the first retreat centers in Brazil. She died in São Paulo on February 13, 2001.
Mário Vieira do Carmo Pacheco was born on December 18, 1926. He died at the age of 74 on February 19, 2001. The first Portuguese Numerary, he joined Opus Dei in 1946. A member of the Regional Commission of Portugal for many years, he also taught philosophy at the University of Lisbon. He had great prestige as a professor due to his wide knowledge, dedication to his students and good nature, and carried out a broad apostolate in his professional milieu.
María Isabel de la Prada Espina was born in Seville, Spain, on November 18, 1958. A member of Opus Dei since 1979, she was noted for her simplicity and cheerfulness and the positive spirit with which she confronted difficulties. While expecting her eighth child she was diagnosed with a cancer that had metastasized. She refused to accept treatment for the cancer in order to prevent any possible harm to the child she was expecting, and she bore her great pain with Christian fortitude. After the child was born, she began a long treatment that forced her to restrict her normal activity. She died in Seville on March 6, 2001.
Jaime Rubio Amador A member of Opus Dei since 1975, he helped out from the beginning in the apostolic work in Puerto Rico. For many years he worked in the metallurgical industry until his retirement. In the last years of his life he suffered a number of infirmities that he bore with Christian patience. He died on June 6, 2001, at the age of 76, in Delray, Florida.
Josefina Shamkow de Del Río, was born in Caracas on March 19, 1921. She became the first Venezuelan Supernumerary of the women’s branch in 1954, the year in which the first women came to that country to begin Opus Dei’s apostolic activities. She contributed generously to the development of the apostolates of the Work in Venezuela and New York, where she lived for a time. She died of a cardiac ailment on April 17, 2001 in Caracas.
José Vicente Vitta was born in Santa Fe, Argentina, on April 2, 1927, and died in Rosario on May 15, 2001. He was one of the first Supernumeraries in Argentina, having joined Opus Dei in 1955. An accountant, he enjoyed great professional prestige. He also taught in the university and helped start a course in professional ethics in the School of Economic Science. His published works on this subject gained him national and international recognition. The father of six children, he continued studying and working, with a youthful spirit, right to the last moment of his life.
Luis María Ybarra Oriol was born in Guecho, Vizcaya, on November 20, 1912. He met Blessed Josemaria in 1944. Before joining the work he collaborated in the start of the Abando Student Residence and Gaztelueta School. The father of seven, he became a Supernumerary in 1964. His fortitude and supernatural spirit in accepting his final illness was exemplary to all around him. He died in Las Arenas, Vizcaya, on March 10, 2001.
Bernadetta Yoko Sakamoto was born in Osaka, Japan, on July 23, 1924. She became a member of the Prelature in 1991. After liver cancer was diagnosed she underwent a number of surgical operations, from which she never fully recovered. Offering her sufferings to God with a lot of peace, she surrendered her soul to our Lord on April 2, 2001.
