Faithful of Opus Dei who died in the second half of 2001

Teresa Alfaro was born in Lima on November 1, 1921. She met the Work in México and became a Supernumerary in 1960. After moving to France with her family in 1966, she helped out greatly in the apostolic work in that country. She died in La Roque d’Anthéron, near Aix-en-Provence, on October 20, 2001, after a long and painful illness. With her husband’s help, she raised her six children in the faith in an exemplary way. One of their sons is now a priest.

Jesús Alberto Cagigal Gutiérrez was born on February 20, 1924 in Deusto (Vizcaya, Spain). He studied architecture in Madrid. In 1942 he lived in Jenner, one of Opus Dei’s first centers. He enjoyed widespread profesional prestige and received numerous awards for his work. In the early fifties, he helped design the central offices of Opus Dei in Rome. He was well-known for his humor, even when God allowed the gradual loss of his sight during the final months of his life. He died in Madrid on September 13, 2001.

Kuno Diethlem was born in Sankt Gallen, Switzerland, on December 12, 1946. He studied science in Zürich. A member of Opus Dei since 1969, he was especially happy for the opportunity to begin apostolic work in his native city, while always being available to go wherever his help was needed. His life was characterized by sobriety, simplicity, and a spirit of service. He died in Zürich on September 29, 2001.

Félix Falcón Alonso was born in Alba de Cerrato (Palencia, Spain) in 1925. He joined Opus Dei as an Associate member in 1960, and died of leukemia in Pamplona on November 6, 2001. A prestigious lawyer, he helped begin the Association for the Development of Schools (Fomento de Centros de Enseñanza), an institution responsible for starting many schools in Spain. His concern to give a Christian focus to education led him to become president of one of the most important associations involved in private education in Spain, a position he held at his death.

Josefina Flores de Godoy, born in Guatemala in 1908, was the mother of eight children. A member of Opus Dei since 1976, she died with great peace on November 18, 2001, at the age of 93. She had no fear of death, and joyfully offered her declining health and physical limitations to God.

Natividad García Pérez was born in San Ildefonso in the province of Segovia, Spain, on March 7, 1920. She held degrees in chemistry and education. After graduating, she worked with the Committee for Advanced Scientific Research, where she met the Work. During the next few years she started bookstores in various cities. Later she dedicated herself to the administration of centers of the Prelature and to starting and directing apostolic activities. She was outstanding for her apostolic zeal and her ability to form friendships with people from widely different backgrounds. She died in Burgos on October 22, 2001.

María Luisa Lorenzo Rafols was born on June 14, 1923, in Zamboanga in the Philippines. A professor of comparative literature, she was well known in university circles and also had great prestige in the world of business. She was the first Philippine woman to become an Associate and contributed decisively to the beginning of the apostolic work of Opus Dei in her country. She died on November 20, 2001.

Silvério Martins da Silva was born on January 3, 1934. An engineer, he was the father of eight children. He collaborated in the development of various apostolic projects in Portugal and Brazil. After a prolonged sickness that he accepted with great serenity, he died on October 29, 2001.

Mariano Navarro Rubio was born on November 14, 1913, in Burbáguena (Teruel, Spain) and died in Madrid on November 3, 2001, after a lengthy illness that forced him to spend the last years of his life immobile. He met Blessed Josemaria early in 1940, and had regular spiritual direction with him. He was one of the first Supernumeraries in Opus Dei. He gained great professional prestige as a lawyer for the Council of State, Secretary of the Treasury and head of the Bank of Spain. An exemplary father, he gave a solid Christian education to his eleven children.

Teodoro Ruiz Jusué was born in Barcelona on December 27, 1917. He studied law in Valladolid, where he met Blessed Josemaria in 1940. Ordained a priest in 1946, he went to Colombia to start Opus Dei in that country in 1951. In 1964 he returned to Spain. From that time on he worked with apostolic zeal and good humor in various priestly tasks in Pamplona, Valencia and Palma de Mallorca, the city where he died on July 28, 2001.

Junio Rustico Martinez was born in the Philippines on June 20, 1940, and died on July 2, 2001. When he met the Work in 1984, he was the driver of a small three-wheeled taxi—a means of transportation common in rural areas and city “barrios”—and an installer of aluminum windows. During the last years of his life he gave courses of lectures on human virtues in work. Through his personal contact with the thousands of persons attending his courses, he brought many people closer to God and to the sacraments.

Lucrecia Sáenz Vázquez de Palma was born on March 27, 1925 in Buenos Aires, where she died on July 9, 2001. One of the first women in Opus Dei in Argentina, she brought a great number of people to the Work. She worked as an English teacher for many years, and her students called her “the teacher with the smile.” During her long final illness, she fully accepted God’s will and embraced the physical sufferings that our Lord sent her, offering them up for the good of souls.

Dolores Santos Arrate, was born in Valladolid, Spain, on January 16, 1949, and joined the Work in 1974. After receiving a degree in political science, she worked as manager in a foundation for the physically disabled before starting her own business. She died in Madrid on July 20, 2001.

Renzo Sozzi died on December 19, 2001. Of Italian origin, he moved to Brazil where he married and raised six children. He was exemplary for his piety and apostolic zeal. He had a great devotion to Blessed Josemaria, whom he met in 1974 and to whom he attributed the cure of an illness he had suffered from for many years. He bore his final illness with great joy and faith, offering all his sufferings for the Church.

María Teresa Torres de Correa was born in Utuado, Puerto Rico, on August 9, 1935. She gave up her professional work in order to dedicate herself fully to her three children. After asking for admission to the Work in 1978, she carried out a broad personal apostolate. Many of her friends and acquaintances asked to be named Cooperators of Opus Dei.

Alberto Ullastres Calvo was born on January 15, 1915 in Madrid, where he died on November 15, 2001. He met the founder of Opus Dei in 1940. He was a university professor, Minister of Commerce and, later, Spanish ambassador to the European Common Market. His simplicity and loyal spirit of service won him the friendship and trust of many people, who were moved by the example of his Christian life. He carried out a deep apostolate in his professional environment.

Antonio Valero Vicente was born in Saragossa, Spain, on March 1, 1925. A textile engineer, he was a member of Opus Dei since 1951. In conformity with the wishes of Blessed Josemaria, in 1958 he began in Barcelona a graduate school of business, the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de la Empresa (IESE), of which he was the first director. He was outstanding in his capacity for work and for his optimistic and open attitude, which he employed to carry out a broad apostolate. He died in Saragossa on August 8, 2001.
