Faithful of Opus Dei who died in the first half of 2002

Fernando Badrena Trápaga was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, on June, 19, 1913 and died in San Juan, Puerto Rico on May 20, 2002. One of the first Supernumeraries in San Juan, he strove with great generosity to further the apostolic activities of Opus Dei. He was an engineer and ran a small business providing industrial supplies. He had seven children. Always a cheerful person, he bore his long illness with patience and a Christian spirit, and with gratitude towards those who cared for him.

Juan Carlos Beascoechea Gabiria was born on January 3, 1932 in Bilbao, Spain. He joined Opus Dei in 1950. After his ordination, he carried out much of his priestly work in the United States. He spent the last years of his life in Pamplona, Spain, in various apostolic tasks. His priestly soul was shown in a special way in his administration of the sacrament of Penance. He dedicated many hours each day to the confessional and to spiritual direction. He showed exemplary solicitude and constancy in his concern for souls. He died on Saturday, March 16, 2002, after several months of a serious illness which he bore with cheerfulness and a supernatural spirit.

Alicia Arteta de Pérez was born in Quito on March 8, 1914. She met the Work when Opus Dei was taking its first steps in Ecuador, and requested admission in 1963. She gave a Christian education to her eleven children. She died on March 22, 2002, after a long series of illnesses and physical limitations-especially loss of her sight-which she offered to God and which never took away her peace.

Concepción de la Rosa García was born in 1934 in Archidona near Málaga, Spain. One of the faithful of Opus Dei since 1961, she worked in a variety of domestic tasks, which she always considered a true profession that could be sanctified. She dedicated a good part of her time to apostolic and educational activities of the Prelature. Throughout her final illness, she united herself even more closely to our Lord, and strove to bring those who cared for her closer to God. She died in Archidona on February 18, 2002.

Blanca Luz Echeverría Castro was born in San Salvador on July 9, 1916. An Associate of Opus Dei since 1967, she died on April 6, 2002. In February she suffered a cerebral hemorrhage from which she never recovered. Offering all her suffering for the Church, the Pope, the Prelate of Opus Dei and the apostolates of the Work, she was an example of Christian fidelity, joy, optimism and apostolic zeal.

Rosheen Limbers was one of the first Cooperators in Australia, and became a member of the Prelature in 1987. She had eight children. She contributed to the promotion of the first high schools of the PARED Foundation in Sydney and to the development of a series of courses of Family Development. In 1996 she suffered a stroke that left her partially incapacitated. From then on, she supported these apostolic initiatives by offering up her physical limitations, which she accepted with a spirit of penance and joy. She died on February 15, 2002.

Ernesto Machado Soares de Oliveira e Sousa was born on November 20, 1913 on the island of Pico in the Azores, and died on February 16, 2002 in Oporto, Portugal, the city where he spent a great part of his life. With a degree in civil and military engineering, at the age of 49 he became the youngest general in the Portuguese army. He held important military and civilian posts in Portugal and Angola, making a special effort in the latter country to establish a peace based on justice and charity. A faithful of Opus Dei since 1968, he always lived his Christian vocation in a generous dedication to others.

José Ramón Madurga Lacalle was born in Saragossa, Spain on November 10, 1922. He studied engineering at the Special School of Industrial Engineering in Madrid and Bilbao. He became a member of Opus Dei in 1940. In 1947 he began the apostolic work of Opus Dei in Ireland. Ordained a priest in 1951, he lived in the United States until 1958, at which time he moved to Japan to begin the apostolic work of Opus Dei in that country. He served as Regional Vicar of Japan until 1997. He lived his dedication to God in the Work with exemplary loyalty, trying to faithfully transmit the spirit that he had received directly from Blessed Josemaria. Our Lord blessed his life with abundant fruit. He died on June 29, 2002 of a heart attack.

Rosemary Njeri Mbao was born in Gaichanjiro in Muranga, Kenya on September 29, 1962. She was the fourth of seven brothers and sisters. In 1983 she began to study in Kibondeni College, where she met Opus Dei. She worked in the domestic administration of centers of the Prelature, which she considered essential for the apostolic work of Opus Dei. She taught the younger people to work well, taking care of little things for love of God. Her good example, her life of simple piety, her intelligence and ability to get along with people helped many persons to come closer to God. She died on January 29, 2002, after suffering a serious illness for three years, which she accepted as a caress from our Lord and as a great opportunity to win God’s grace for many souls.

Manuel Pérez Sánchez was born in Herrera de Ibio, Santander, Spain, on November 8, 1905. During his university studies as a highway engineer he met the founder of Opus Dei, and took part in various means of formation that were offered at the DYA. Urged by the apostolic zeal of Blessed Josemaría to put more fellows in contact with the Work, it was he who in 1935 introduced the founder to Alvaro del Portillo. One of the faithful of Opus Dei since 1948, he died on March 29, 2002, at the age of 96.

Nicola Pinna was born in Sassari, Sardinia, Italy on July 10, 1947. A faithful of Opus Dei from his college years, he worked as professor of Natural Science in Bologna, until the first symptoms of his serious illness appeared in 1977. In his last years, his progressive immobility and difficulty in speaking were no obstacle to his dedication with apostolic zeal to the study of bioethics and-through conferences, publications and congresses-to the defense of life. He died in Bologna on January 13, 2002. Since his death, many pro-life initiatives have been named in his honor.

José Enrique Rivas Pérez was born in Saragossa, Spain in 1920. He became a member of the Work in 1953. He was one of the first Supernumeraries from his city. He had nine children, whom he strove to raise in a Christian manner. He worked actively in starting up the Miraflores Student Residence, a corporate work of Opus Dei, and helped further other apostolic initiatives in Aragon. A professor of legal history, he also worked as a lawyer for more than fifty years. He died on April 17, 2002.

Roberto Salvat Romero was born in Madrid on March 19, 1928. He joined Opus Dei in 1949. He studied law at the University of Salamanca and moved to Venezuela in 1952 to begin the apostolic work of Opus Dei in that country, where he lived for the rest of his life. Ordained a priest in 1956, he was the Counsellor of Venezuela from 1959 to 1977, carrying out an intense apostolic activity. In the last years of his life he exercised his pastoral work at the Church of the Holy Family in Caracas. He died on March 14, 2002.

Helena Sanabria de Acosta was one of the first Supernumeraries in Venezuela. She was the mother of seven, one of them a Numerary priest. She generously carried out the apostolic tasks that were entrusted to her. She endured a long sickness, as a result of which she was near death several times: the last of these shortly before the Prelate of Opus Dei visited her country in August 2001. On that occasion she had the joy of being with him. She died on March 30, 2002.
