Faithful of Opus Dei and members of the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross who died in the second half of the year 2005

In the second half of 2005, 273 faithful of the Prelature and 18 members of the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross passed away.
The suffrages stipulated by Saint Josemaría have been offered for these deceased. As we continue to pray for them, let us thank God for the example they left us through their fidelity in striving to transform their professional work and the ordinary circumstances of their lives into an occasion for loving God and serving the Church and all souls. Their love for God and neighbor constitutes the meaning and value of their lives, whether outstanding in the eyes of others, or whether quite ordinary, as was true in most cases.
In addition to the names of all who have died during this period, we have gathered a few biographical details about some of the deceased, which give an idea of the variety of circumstances and situations in which the faithful of Opus Dei live. For reasons of space, we are not including this data in the other cases, but we must not forget that we have a debt of gratitude towards all of them for the example of fidelity they have left us. These brief sketches will help us live the Communion of Saints better with those who have preceded us to heaven.

Joseph D. Buckley was born on June 16, 1932. He served in the Navy and, after graduating from Harvard University in 1955, worked in banking. He asked for admission to Opus Dei in 1979. With other parents he helped start Montrose School, a girls’ school where his daughters studied and on whose board of directors he served for many years. After his retirement he devoted himself to historical research and gave talks on naval aviation. His book Wings over Cape Cod recounts the history of air operations in Massachusetts during the First World War. He was very apostolic and generous with his time and financial resources. In recent years, he and his wife helped in the maintenance of Wynnview, a house in Vermont used for apostolic activities with young people. He died on August 15, 2005.

Arnaldo Contreras was born in Tucuman (Argentina) on July 5, 1920. He moved to Rosario to study medicine, and after completing his studies began practicing his profession there. He specialized as an endocrinologist and later received a doctorate in that field. He went on to become director of endocrinology in Rosario. In addition to the patients that he assisted in his private practice, he did charity work for the poor in various hospitals. He asked for admission in Opus Dei as a Numerary in 1952, when the Work was beginning in his country. A person of strong character and good humor, he brought many friends, colleagues and patients closer to God. He spent time with St. Josemaría during his visit to Argentina in 1974 and helped him relax by playing the piano for him. In his last years, various infirmities made it impossible for him to walk and limited his activity. Fully accepting God’s will and maintaining his good humor right to the end, he died on Saturday, November 5, 2005.

He began his studies of medicine at the Estudio General de Navarra and completed them at the University of Barcelona. Afterwards he went to Rome where he did ecclesiastical studies and carried out various tasks, among them that of Vice-Rector of the Roman College of the Holy Cross. He was ordained as a priest on August 15, 1971 and joined the faculty of Theology at the University of Navarre. He held the first full professorship of Ecclesiastical Law in Spain. He took part in the preparatory work for the establishment of Opus Dei as a personal Prelature and, later, in the resolution of questions related to the new canonical status of the Work. In 1986 he was appointed prelate of honor to His Holiness and consultor for the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts. He died on November 22, 2005 in Pamplona, at the age of 89.

Ordained a priest in 1974, he carried out various pastoral tasks in Valladolid, at the Shrine of Torreciudad, in Seville and in Cadiz. Because of his helpful, cheerful and welcoming character, as well as his availability for apostolic and pastoral needs, he was well liked by all. He died on September 16, 2005 in an automobile accident.

He also placed his professional ability and business acumen at the service of his parish and various religious institutions. He had great prestige among his employees and business associates. He understood very well that his work and family life were the path to holiness that God had foreseen for him.

Danilo Alaras Mojica was born on May 7, 1938. He was an expert salesman with a great capacity for work. He discovered his aptitude for teaching when he began to give means of formation to his friends, many of whom came close to the Work. He developed programs of formation for executives and employees about values in work. He also gave classes at the University of Asia and the Pacific in Manila, a corporate work of Opus Dei. From 1995 on he fought a long battle with cancer which did not prevent him from maintaining his habitual rhythm of work. He died on December 9, well prepared for his meeting with our Lord. As his youngest son said at his wake, God wanted him to spend Christmas with him in heaven.

The simplicity that marked her life reflected her strong and deep piety. After being diagnosed with cancer in 2003, she bore the medical treatment and the progressive deterioration of her health with courage and serenity. Even the last months of her sickness were filled with great apostolic activity. She offered her sufferings for the Holy Father, the Church and the apostolic work of the Prelature.

She lived with great abandonment in God’s hands, and accepted suffering in a Christian way, especially on the occasion of the death of her two children and her husband. Despite the deterioration of her health, she remained active till the end of her life, trying always to follow the plan of life and to attend punctually all the means of formation. She died on July 14, 2005.

Conceso Sobradillo Casado was born in Valladolid, Spain, on April 8, 1962. He asked for admission to the Work as an Associate. He studied law and worked as a lawyer for several years. He was ordained a priest in 2001, and exercised his ministry in Valladolid. In addition to giving himself unreservedly to the pastoral work proper to the Prelature, he tried to find time to offer help and friendship to various diocesan priests. He died on August 15, 2005 as a result of a traffic accident when he was traveling to Cologne to take care of a group of young people for World Youth Day. His wake was attended by a great number of people, priests and laity of all walks of life. She returned to the United States and served as a member of the Regional Advisory. She helped start several educational projects and taught philosophy and theology. Suffering from a serious illness during the final sixteen years of her life, she offered her sufferings to our Lord with a strong supernatural outlook. Later he focused his professional efforts in the field of diplomacy and moved to London, where he worked in the Spanish embassy while also carrying out a notable literary work. He wrote biographies of Cardinal Newman (1954) and Thomas More (1966). Among his other works is an original essay entitled El sentido del humor (The Meaning of Humor) (1976). He played an active role in the start and growth of Opus Dei’s apostolic work in the United Kingdom. From 1977 on he devoted himself full time to researching the life of St. Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer. His three volume biography drew on unpublished documentation that included the founder of Opus Dei’s letters and Apuntes intimos (personal journal). In the 1990’s, during the writing of this biography, he lived in Rome. After completing the work, he returned to Spain. After a long sickness that he bore with exemplary patience, he died in Madrid on August 27, 2005. The members of the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross who died during this half year are:

Alberto Cosme do Amaral was born in Touro, in the Diocese of Lamego, Portugal, on October 12, 1916. His parents, humble workers, gave him a solid Christian formation. He discovered his priestly vocation at a very early age and entered the seminary as soon as he finished his primary education. He was ordained a priest in 1939. For several years he took care of rural parishes, before being named spiritual director of the seminary of Lamego. In 1954 he requested admission as an Associate in the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross. He was the first Associate priest in Portugal. In 1964 he was named Auxiliary Bishop of Oporto, and in 1969 of Coimbra. From 1972 to 1993 he was Bishop of Leiria, the diocese which, at his suggestion and through a decision of John Paul II, since 1984 has been called Leiria-Fatima. While bishop there he was given the bullet from the assassination attempt against the Holy Father on May 13, 1981, which is now mounted in one of the crowns of Our Lady of Fatima. As bishop he spent himself in an exemplary way to transmit the faith. His pastoral visits included not only the parishes but also schools and factories. He also dedicated many hours to visiting the sick. Since 1993 he lived in Fatima, in the same room where Pope John Paul II stayed during his first two visits to the shrine. He dedicated many hours to hearing confessions. He died in Leiria on October 7, 2005. He was buried in the shrine of Fatima.
