Faithful of Opus Dei and members of the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross who died in the second half of the year 2006

In the second half of 2006, 303 faithful of the Prelature and 15 members of the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross passed away.

The suffrages stipulated by Saint Josemaría have been offered for these deceased. As we continue to pray for them, let us thank God for the example they left us through their fidelity in striving to transform their professional work and the ordinary circumstances of their lives into an occasion for loving God and serving the Church and all souls. Their love for God and neighbor constitutes the meaning and value of their lives, whether outstanding in the eyes of others, or whether quite ordinary, as was true in most cases.

In addition to the names of all who have died during this period, we have gathered a few biographical details about some of the deceased, which give an idea of the variety of circumstances and situations in which the faithful of Opus Dei live. For reasons of space, we are not including this data in the other cases, but we must not forget that we have a debt of gratitude towards all of them for the example of fidelity they have left us. These brief sketches will help us live the Communion of Saints better with those who have preceded us to heaven.

María Antonia Acinas Alcalde was born in Barbadillo del Mercado (Burgos, Spain) on November 15, 1920. After studies in Philosophy and Letters, she moved to Madrid where she met Opus Dei. She asked for admission to the Work on November 7, 1950. With other women, she went to Peru in 1954 to begin the work of Opus Dei there. She returned to Spain in December 1957, and since then dedicated herself to the domestic administration of the Prelature’s centers and to teaching. She died in Gijón on November 18, 2006.

Mariano Artigas Mayayo died in Pamplona (Spain) on December 23, 2006. Born in Saragossa on December 15, 1938, he requested admission to Opus Dei in 1956 and was ordained a priest in 1964. He lived in Barcelona until the mid-1980’s where he carried out pastoral work in the university and dedicated himself to the formation of members of the Work. Later he moved to Pamplona where he was the first dean of the School of Ecclesiastical Philosophy at the University of Navarra. He had a doctorate in Physics from the University of Barcelona and in Philosophy from both the Lateran University in Rome and the University of Barcelona. He was the author of some twenty books on the relationship between science and faith, and had received international recognition from a number of scientific organizations. He was a member of the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas in Rome and of the International Society for Science and Religion in Cambridge, England.

Nicole Joseph Dookie was born on the island of Trinidad in a Christian home. Led by the example of her husband, she was received into the Catholic Church in March 2002 and requested admission to Opus Dei in October of that same year. About that time she was diagnosed with the sickness that led to her death. She lived her vocation in an exemplary way, leaving an indelible memory of faith shown in deeds, total abandonment and joyful detachment. She prepared her children, ranging in age from 3 to 11, so that they would accept her absence with serenity. She died on July 27, 2006.

Umberto Farri was born in Cuneo (Italy) on November 14, 1928 and died in Rome on October 13, 2006. His funeral was celebrated by the Prelate of Opus Dei. He had requested admission as a Numerary in 1949, during his university studies in Rome. He had a special gift for organization and for friendship and was a person of great ideals and a deep spirit of service. For years he worked alongside St. Josemaría in the government of Opus Dei. He helped develop many social and formative initiatives, among them, the Institute for University Cooperation (ICU). Right to the end of his life, despite losing consciousness form time to time, he was apostolic with those who came to see him.

María Cecilia Gálvez Villanueva was born in Guadalajara (Jalisco, Mexico) on February 10, 1964. After obtaining a degree in Institutional Management, she worked effectively in the administration of centers of the Prelature in various cities. She loved her work very much. When a grave sickness was diagnosed, she calmly accepted God’s will. She wanted to be cured and followed with docility the medical treatments that were prescribed during those years. As death approached, she asked our Lady that she might die on a Saturday or on one of her feast days. On August 15, 2006, in the afternoon, she was able to receive Communion and the Anointing of the Sick. She died soon after, as the text of the Consecration of Opus Dei to the Most Sweet Heart of Mary was being read close to her ear.

Jeannette Gruber de Pérez Febres requested admission as a Supernumerary in 1972, at which time she had seven children. She moved to Barquisimeto (Venezuela), and there, with her husband, assisted in the beginning of the apostolic activities of the Work. She responded generously to her duties as wife and mother. She excelled in affection and a spirit of service, and was always available for anyone in need in her family and for many other people. At the time of her death, 8 of her 10 children had accepted their call to Opus Dei, which she thanked God for with her whole soul. She died on August 28, 2006 after a long sickness that she had suffered from for 17 years.

Blanche Hoffman was one of the first Associates in the United States. She worked for almost her whole life as a primary school teacher. After reaching retirement age, she dedicated herself generously to formational activities for the faithful of Opus Dei and Cooperators in the Milwaukee area. She died after a long sickness borne with serenity and supernatural vision, on October 16, 2006.

Luijino Kiriinya Miungi died on August 28, 2006. He was the second child of one of the first Catholic families in Meru, Kenya. He graduated as a civil engineer in 1981. During his university studies and in the course of his professional work, he dedicated a great deal of time to taking care of young men in university residences and high school clubs. He was a member of the Regional Commission of Opus Dei in Kenya; in 1998 he was ordained as a priest. Likeable and a hard worker, he won the affection of all who knew him. His own wishes and concerns were of little importance when anyone asked him for anything. He accepted with characteristic serenity the news that he had cancer in an advanced state. He offered his sufferings for the intentions of the Prelate and for his visit to Kenya, which was to take place in a few days. On September 9 the Archbishop of Nairobi, Raphael Ndingi Mwana a’ Nzeki, presided over a concelebrated Mass for the repose of his soul in the Cathedral of Nairobi attended by more than 2,500 people.

Eiko Korenaga was born on January 21, 1937. She was one of the first Supernumeraries from Oita in Japan. She was punctual in attending the means of formation, which she harmonized with the demands of her work. She suffered a painful illness in 1996, which became increasingly severe. Right to the end of her life she offered her discomforts for the Holy Father, the Church, the Prelate and the Work. She brought many friends and acquaintances to the Catholic faith through the serenity and peace with which she accepted her sickness. She died on October 13, 2006.

Juan Larrea Holguín was born in Buenos Aires in 1927, the son of Ecuadorian parents. He received his doctorate in law in Rome, where he met St. Josemaría in 1948. He asked for admission to the Work in 1949. From 1952 on he lived in Ecuador, where the stable apostolic work of Opus Dei was begun in 1954. He held the chair of Civil Law at the Catholic University of Ecuador and was also a professor at the Central University of Ecuador. He was the author of hundreds of books on juridical questions, which made him one of the most prolific juridical writers in his country. He was ordained a priest in 1962. Pope Paul VI appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of Quito in 1969 and in 1975 transferred him to Ibarra. In 1983 John Paul II appointed him as the first Military Ordinary of Ecuador, and in 1988 as Archbishop of Guayaquil.
As a priest and later as a bishop, he carried out a broad pastoral work, preaching numerous spiritual retreats, visiting the parishes in his respective dioceses, and encouraging the work in the diocesan seminaries. In 1996 he was diagnosed with cancer. Despite the progressive deterioration of his health, Archbishop Larrea continued to carry out a great amount of work and to publish books. He died on August 27, 2006. His body reposes in the crypt of Guayaquil’s Cathedral.

Maja Lüdin was born on May 20, 1938 in a Protestant family in Basel, Switzerland. In 1961 she decided to become Catholic. He father followed her example years later. After joining Opus Dei in 1964, she worked as a high school teacher. Upon retiring, she dedicated herself to carrying out a social development project in Hungary. Despite being operated on for cancer in 2004, the effects of the illness continued to spread. She bore everything with great courage and serenity. She died in Zürich on December 30, 2006—the first woman Numerary to die in Switzerland.

Mary Theresa Mahoney was born in Taunton, Massachusetts on October 25, 1926. She was a nurse with the U.S. armed forces, attaining the rank of Commander. In 1957 she asked for admission to Opus Dei and the following year went to Rome to study at the Roman College of Holy Mary. In 1960, at the invitation of St. Josemaría, she went to work in Kenya where, together with a number of other women, she helped begin the apostolic work of Opus Dei in that country. It was the great adventure of her life, to which she dedicated the rest of her days. In l965 she was found to have cancer and had to undergo a very aggressive surgical treatment, which she bore with cheerfulness and optimism. In 2006 she traveled to Boston to replace her pacemaker and there discovered that she needed a heart operation. She gave her consent calmly, but always hoping to return to Kenya. She died in Boston on September 17, 2006, having offered all her sufferings for the Church in Kenya and in the United States.

Blaise de Quesada was born in Valdepeñas, Spain, on August 2, 1934. A graduate in law, he was ordained a priest on August 10, 1958. He carried out a broad pastoral work in various cities of France, to which he moved a month after his ordination. He died in Paris on November 25, 2006, as the result of a cancer that had been diagnosed three years earlier. A month before he died, on October 24, he had the joy of receiving a visit from the Prelate of Opus Dei in the hospital where he was being treated. The Prelate was making a stopover in Paris on his return trip to Rome from Lebanon.

Gianmario Roveraro was born in Albenga (Savona, Italy) on May 24, 1936. Married and the father of three children, he formed part of Opus Dei since 1963. An accomplished athlete in his youth, he participated in the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 as a high jumper (he was the first Italian to clear two meters). After obtaining a degree in economics, he worked in the world of finance, where he brought many people to the faith. He dedicated himself enthusiastically to formative activities for university students and assisted in the beginning of several schools inspired by the message of St. Josemaría. His professional rectitude, his refinement in personal relations, and his deep interior life and serenity gained him the esteem of all who knew him. He died under dramatic circumstances as a result of a kidnapping, on July 8, 2006.

Marco Soranzio was born in Gorizia in Italy on April 24, 1977, and died in Milan on November 23, 2006. He met Opus Dei in 1997 in Milan and quickly became a part of the Prelature as a Numerary. A biomedical engineer, since 2002 he dedicated himself to formational work in the Torrescalla University Residence, of which he became director in 2004. He was exemplary in his studies and in his effort to incarnate the spirit of Opus Dei with fidelity. He died in a traffic accident on his way to see a friend.

Justa Torrecilla Baltar was born in the city of Toledo in Spain on August 1, 1934. She requested admission as a Numerary Assistant in Molinoviejo near Segovia. She worked with cheerfulness and self-sacrifice in the domestic tasks of the Prelature’s centers. She died in Madrid on November 1, 2006, as the result of a severe illness that she bore with great supernatural outlook.

Amparo Vall-Serra de Menéndez was one of the first Supernumeraries of Bogotá. She belonged to Opus Dei since 1958. She and her husband, also in Opus Dei, had a large family. Despite her family’s tight financial circumstances, she always managed to help generously in the extension of the apostolic work of the Prelature, trusting that God would not be outdone in generosity. A hard worker and a good housekeeper, right up to her last moments she strove to be ordered and to make good use of time. She struggled to always maintain her good humor and optimism, and to radiate peace and affection to those around her. People often asked her the reason for her cheerfulness, since everyone knew that her life had no lack of difficulties. She died on October 15, 2006.
