Faithful of Opus Dei and members of the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross who died in the second half of the year 2007

In the second half of 2007, 310 faithful of the Prelature and 14 members of the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross passed away.

The suffrages stipulated by Saint Josemaría have been offered for these deceased. As we continue to pray for them, let us thank God for the example they left us through their fidelity in striving to transform their professional work and the ordinary circumstances of their lives into an occasion for loving God and serving the Church and all souls. Their love for God and neighbor constitutes the meaning and value of their lives, whether outstanding in the eyes of others, or whether quite ordinary, as was true in most cases.

In addition to the names of all who have died during this period, we have gathered a few biographical details about some of the deceased, which give an idea of the variety of circumstances and situations in which the faithful of Opus Dei live. For reasons of space, we are not including this data in the other cases, but we must not forget that we have a debt of gratitude towards all of them for the example of fidelity they have left us. These brief sketches will help us live the Communion of Saints better with those who have preceded us to heaven.

André Allaire was born on September 1, 1934 in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, Canada. He was the first Supernumerary of Opus Dei in Canada. He lived in the Piedmont Student Residence when the Work’s apostolate was taking its first steps in the country. He asked to join Opus Dei on March 19, 1958. Married and the father of four children, he worked for more than thirty years as an orthopedic surgeon in Drummondville, Quebec. His prestige enabled him to ensure that the hospital where he worked cared for the sick in accord with Christian morality. He carried out an extensive apostolate among his patients (one of whom is now a priest of the Prelature), as well as with his colleagues and friends. He was also very active in civic affairs. In the 70’s, for example, he headed a committee that solicited the help of many public and private organisms to clean up the river that runs through Drummondville. He continued working until a few weeks before being hospitalized to undergo chemotherapy treatment for cancer. He was president of various foundations that assisted the apostolates of Opus Dei. He lived his vocation faithfully, and was an example to other Supernumeraries with his constant smile and great determination to fulfill his apostolic assignments. He died in Montreal on October 30, 2007.

Emilio Bonell was born in Valencia, Spain, on July 3, 1929. He asked for admission to Opus Dei when studying medicine and was ordained a priest on September 20, 1953. In 1961, at the request of St. Josemaría, he moved to Argentina where he served as Regional Vicar of Opus Dei until July of 1991. He carried out an intense priestly work, bringing thousands of people closer to God and encouraging them to deepen their Christian life. At the same time, he furthered the expansion of the stable apostolic work of Opus Dei to new cities and districts. He also encouraged the creation of many social development and educational institutions. He died on the night of Wednesday, July 18, 2007, in Buenos Aires.

Joaquín Casellas Roure was born in Arenys de Mar, Barcelona, Spain on March 19, 1925, and joined Opus Dei in 1949. In 1952 he received a prize for the best Licentiate of that year and some years later obtained the degree of Doctor of Industrial Engineering. While working in Valencia as an engineer for the national railway, he was director of the La Alameda student residence from 1952 to 1956. From 1962 to 1978 he was director of the School of Industrial Engineering at the University of Navarra, which had begun its operations in San Sebastian the year before he arrived. He was professor of Mechanics and later of Controls and Automatic Regulators. He published a number of books and carried out numerous research projects for industries in the province of Guipuzcoa. Upon his retirement in 1995, he expressed a desire to dedicate himself to the care of the sick and moved to Pamplona to carry out this service. He died on July 9, 2007. On the following day, the Prelate of Opus Dei celebrated the funeral Mass for his soul in the oratory of the Mendaur Student Residence.

Piedad de la Cierva Viudes was born in Murcia, Spain, on June 1, 1913. She studied chemistry at the University of Valencia. She was one of the first women scientists in Spain, and had research experience in both European and American universities. She met Opus Dei in 1945 through reading The Way and asked for admission as an Associate on Christmas Day in 1952. At that time there were only three women Associates in Madrid. With great simplicity, she united her professional prestige with a wide apostolate among women scientists and with the spouses of her colleagues. She died in Madrid on December 31, 2007.

Marta Cojolón Yacht was born on April 9, 1942 in Alotenango, Sacatepéquez, Guatemala. A Numerary Assistant, she was the first person to join Opus Dei in Central America. Until the end of her life she was the “foundation” of the work of Opus Dei in the Isthmus countries, as St. Josemaría said during his trip to Guatemala in February of 1975. When informed of the gravity of her final sickness, she reacted with great supernatural outlook. She offered the intense pain for the Church and the Work without ever complaining, and worked until a day before her death, when she felt especially sick. That day she intensified her prayers to Don Álvaro to help her reach heaven. After being taken to a hospital, she received the comfort of the last sacraments. She surrendered her soul to God on Saturday, September 29, 2007, with the same simplicity and discretion with which she had lived her entire life.

Evangelina Del Forno was one of the first women of Opus Dei in Argentina. She was born in San Nicolás on December 30, 1930. She studied Architecture at the National University of Rosario, the city where she met the Work. In August 1954 she made a retreat, and on October 24 of that year asked for admission as a Numerary. In 1957 she went to Rome to study at the Roman College of Holy Mary. The following year, she returned to her country and assisted in Opus Dei’s apostolic expansion through her work on the Regional Advisory. In 1968 she returned to Rome to collaborate in several architectural projects. In 1971, once more back in Argentina, she moved to Cordoba, where the apostolic work of Opus Dei was just beginning, and worked as an architect in that city. Later she moved to Buenos Aires, where she worked as a writer for a sports magazine (she had great interest in mountain sports) and helped out in many apostolic initiatives. From 1999 until her death she lived in Rosario. She was outstanding for her human qualities and facility in forming friendships. She accepted her final sickness with joy and patience, offering her suffering for the Church and for the apostolic work of Opus Dei in Russia. She had a deep devotion to St. Josemaría, whom she had known personally, and for the Servant of God Bishop Álvaro del Portillo. She died on July 9, 2007.

Elisabeth Kudla was born on July 14, 1953 in Bonn, Germany.
She met Opus Dei as a high school student and soon asked for admission to the Work. She studied Romance Philology in Bonn and in Cologne. In 1982 she attained her doctorate. She had musical talents and a facility for languages. While preparing for her doctorate, she dedicated herself to the domestic care of centers of Opus Dei, first in Cologne and later in Münster. In 1986, at the invitation of the Prelate of Opus Dei, she moved to Sweden to help begin apostolic work in the Nordic countries. Her love for these countries led her to acquire Swedish citizenship. After 1997, once more back in Bonn, she looked after activities of Christian formation in the Frankfurt and Mainz area, and later on in Trier. She had a deep devotion to the Eucharist. After more than a year of struggle with a very aggressive cancer, she died on August 10, 2007 in Trier and was buried in Cologne. She is the first German woman Numerary who has died.

Fernando Larraín Benavente was born in Chile on August 16, 1926. A Supernumerary of Opus Dei since 1987, he was married and had twelve children. An engineer by profession, he had a comfortable financial situation, but at a moment of crisis his business collapsed and his savings were greatly reduced. He was, nevertheless, always cheerful and optimistic. He was very attentive to his practices of piety and always put attendance at Mass in first place each day, also when his work required him to travel. He suffered from a facial cancer that led to the loss of an eye and very painful operations. He died on November 28, 2007, the day after being struck by a car while preparing to take part in a workshop at an Opus Dei center.

Pierre Lefresne was born in Redon (Ille-et-Vilaine, France) on September 21, 1943. A doctor of science with a diploma in pharmacy, he worked at the National Center for Scientific Research and studied philosophy and theology in Rome and at the University of Navarre. He met Opus Dei when he was beginning his professional life. Together with 31 other faithful of Opus Dei, he was ordained a priest by the Servant of God John Paul II on June 6, 1982. He served as Regional Vicar of Opus Dei for several years. Those who knew him remarked on the affability and good humor with which he received people and his total availability for the various tasks entrusted to him. He died on September 6, 2007, near Saint Laurent du Pont (on the massif de la Chartreuse, a few miles from Grenoble), as the result of a fall on a mountain path.

Domingo Marcos Poveda was born in La Velles (Salamanca, Spain) on October 5, 1947. After studying industrial pedagogy in Barcelona, where he asked for admission as an Associate on September 24, 1966, he worked in an electrical plant and gave professional formation at the Xaloc Secondary School. He was ordained a priest on September 15, 1994. Shortly thereafter the first symptoms appeared of a cancer from which he eventually died. For ten years he exercised his ministry with heroic sacrifice, overcoming with good humor and fortitude the weakness and pain caused by his infirmity and the painful treatments to which he had to submit. He strove to make the Eucharist the center of his life and showed a true passion for preaching. He died on October 28, 2007, after receiving the last sacraments while fully conscious.

Pedro Luis de Miguel Fernández was born in 1956 in Vitoria, Spain, and there joined Opus Dei at a young age. When he finished his studies in history, he dedicated himself primarily to assisting the apostolic work of Opus Dei. For seven years, he served as Secretary of the Council of the Delegation of Pamplona. He gave classes at the School of Communications at the University of Navarra and for three years directed the magazine Nuestro Tiempo. He also published literary criticism and wrote a number of books. An apostolic person with great supernatural vision, he lived more recently in Bilbao, where he worked in specialized publishing. In November 2006 he was diagnosed with a stomach caner. Knowing the gravity of his sickness from the first moment, he accepted it with a supernatural spirit. Pedro was very much cheered by the visits he received from the Prelate of the Work. After his death on August 12, 2007, the Prelate celebrated his funeral Mass in the oratory of Irabia student residence.

Fumiko Nakamachiwas born on December 11, 1934. As a youth she was baptized with the name of Maria Teresia, and from then on sought the path that God wanted for her in life. In 1961 she began to work in domestic service in a center of Opus Dei. There she discovered the value of that occupation, which she made her professional work. She requested admission to Opus Dei as a Supernumerary on January 2, 1963. Without calling attention to herself, she was an example of generosity for many people. At the beginning of 2007, a grave illness was diagnosed. Abandoning herself into God’s hands, she offered all her suffering for the Church, for the Prelate of Opus Dei, and for her family. She died on October 1, 2007.

Celsa Rodríguez Cerreda was born on June 19, 1927 in Orense, Spain. A graduate in pharmacy, she joined the Prelature in 1953. In 1958, at the invitation of St. Josemaría, she moved to France, where she formed part of the group that began apostolic work with women there. She also took part in the first steps of Opus Dei in Belgium. For years she dedicated herself to tasks of Christian formation in Paris, Grenoble, Lyons, Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, Toulouse and Rennes. She had great apostolic zeal and a talent for creating a family atmosphere wherever she went. She was noted for her Marian piety and her eagerness to transmit the spirit of Opus Dei faithfully. In 2006 she became aware that she had lung cancer. She accepted this illness with supernatural outlook and died on July 19, 2007 in Grenoble.

Ramón Taboada del Río was born on December 18, 1922 in Valladolid, Spain. He asked for admission to Opus Dei in 1940. In 1944 and 1945 he lived with St. Josemaría in the Madrid residence of Diego de León. He was ordained a priest on July 1, 1951. St. Josemaría and Don Álvaro del Portillo both attended the first retreat that he preached. He carried out his pastoral work in Spain until1962, when he moved to Paraguay, to begin the apostolic activity of the Work there. He was one of the first professors at the Catholic University of Paraguay, and was also a judge on the Interdiocesan Ecclesiastical Tribunal. Until the day of his death on October 17, 2007, he passed on to everyone the enthusiasm of his dedication, as well as the joy of his good spirit and his great self-sacrifice in fulfilling his priestly duties. Hundreds of people attended his funeral, including several bishops.

Alberto Taboada del Rio was born in Madrid on March 2, 1919 and died in Pamplona on December 24, 2007. He asked for admission to Opus Dei in Valladolid as a law student in 1940, a few days after having a conversation with St. Josemaría that he vividly recalled all his life. That priest, he said, had such a capacity to convince with his words and his holy life, that he felt he could go with him to the ends of the earth, unconditionally. In the 1943-44 school year, he was an adjunct professor at the University of Valladolid, and in 1946-47 in that of Madrid, where, at the same time, he began his doctoral studies. In 1947 he moved to Italy. He was ordained a priest in 1954, and a year later received his doctorate in Canon Law. Always docile to the indications and suggestions of St. Josemaría, he went from one city to another throughout Italy beginning or developing the apostolic work. In the final ten years of his life, he bore the burden of cancer and severe diabetes with supernatural outlook and a sense of humor.

Ricardo Vargas Acosta was born in Bogotá on June 27, 1930. He dedicated himself professionally to industrial livestock raising and was one of the promoters of the Los Cerros High School, a corporative apostolic work of Opus Dei, and of various family farm schools. He accepted with a supernatural outlook the kidnapping of a son and a daughter (the latter lasting about two years). He also bore with Christian serenity the various brain operations that he had to undergo because of a tumor that could never be completely eliminated. Both his colleagues and employees esteemed him highly. He died in Bogotá on December 9, 2007.

The members of the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross who died during this half year are:

Sergio Correa was born in Santiago, Chile, on February 8, 1915 and died on December 24, 2007. He was ordained a priest in 1939 after studying at the seminary for the diocese of Santiago. From 1985 on he belonged to the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross. His priestly zeal led him to celebrate Holy Mass with great care, to foster many vocations to the seminary, and to show concern for the well-being of his brothers in the priesthood. He founded an institution dedicated to the care of the elderly which grew to forty homes throughout the country, some of them dedicated to priests. He died surrounded by the affection of many priests and seminarians—as long as his health permitted, he made frequent visit to the seminary—and lay faithful, men and women, whom he zealously served throughout his life spurred by his great zeal for souls. The Cardinal Archbishop of Santiago, with other bishops and priests, celebrated his funeral Mass in a church crowded with faithful.
